Always Tired? Constantly Cold? Your Blood Might Be Trying to Tell You Something

Fatigue that doesn't go away with rest, skin that looks a little "off," and a body that feels like it's running on low battery — these could all be signs of anemia. Here's what it really means, why it happens, and how the right nutrition can help your blood do its job again.

Sound familiar? These aren't random complaints. They're your body quietly waving a flag — and anemia might just be what's behind it all.

So What Exactly Is Anemia?

Anemia occurs when your blood is unable to carry enough oxygen around the body to function properly — most commonly because you don't have enough red blood cells, or because the red blood cells you do have lack a protein called haemoglobin.

Think of your red blood cells as tiny delivery vehicles, and haemoglobin as the cargo they carry — oxygen. When either the vehicles or the cargo are in short supply, every organ and tissue in your body gets less oxygen than it needs to function well. And that's when you start to feel it.

Sometimes anemia isn't a standalone condition — it's actually your body's way of signalling that something else is going on underneath, whether that's poor nutrition, a blood disorder, a genetic condition, or a chronic illness interfering with how your body produces or maintains red blood cells.

The Types That Show Up Most Often

Not all anemia is the same, and knowing which type you're dealing with matters — because the fix looks different for each one.

Nutritional anemia — the kind directly linked to what you eat — is among the most common and includes:

Iron deficiency anemia: the most widespread type, caused by insufficient iron for haemoglobin production, often due to poor diet or blood loss

Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia: caused by inadequate B12 intake or absorption issues, leading to a low red blood cell count and sometimes neurological symptoms.

Megaloblastic anemia: triggered by a deficiency in B12 or B9 (folate), causing the body to produce unusually large red blood cells that don't function properly.

Pernicious anemia: leads to reduced absorption of dietary vitamin B12, resulting in a deficiency even when intake seems adequate.

Beyond nutrition, anemia can also be caused by large blood losses, small but recurrent blood loss such as heavy menstrual bleeding or ulcers, hypothyroidism, or long-term chronic illnesses.

The Symptoms That Often Get Dismissed

Here's the frustrating thing about anemia — its symptoms are incredibly easy to chalk up to "just being busy" or "not sleeping well enough." But they're worth taking seriously.

Symptoms include tiredness, dizziness or feeling lightheaded, chest pain, cold hands and feet, headache, shortness of breath, pale skin, bruising, and hair loss or thinning.

In more severe cases, heart palpitations and breathlessness occur as the body attempts to increase tissue oxygenation. Outward signs of anemia also include pale mucus membranes — especially noticeable on the inside of the eyelid — dry skin, and brittle nails.

Who Needs to Watch Out the Most?

While anemia can affect anyone, certain groups face a significantly higher risk:

Women of reproductive age — heavy menstrual periods are one of the leading causes of iron loss

Pregnant women — the body's iron and folate demands increase considerably during pregnancy

Children and teenagers** — rapid growth phases increase nutritional needs quickly

Older adults — absorption of key nutrients like B12 naturally declines with age

Vegetarians and vegans — plant-based diets can be low in heme iron, the most readily absorbed form.

.People on certain medications, including antacids, oral contraceptives, diabetes medication, antibiotics, cholesterol medication, and seizure medication — many of which can inhibit the absorption of B vitamins or iron.

Here's what to focus on:

Iron-rich foods, every day. Lean red meat, fish, liver, poultry, legumes like beans and lentils, fortified cereals, and dark green leafy vegetables are all excellent sources of iron. Leeks, dried apricots, prunes, raisins, oats, apples, strawberries, and blackstrap molasses are also worth adding to your regular rotation.

Pair iron with vitamin C. This is one of the most practical and underused nutrition tips for anemia. Eating foods rich in vitamin C — citrus fruits, broccoli, bell peppers, strawberries — alongside iron-rich foods significantly helps your body absorb that iron more effectively.

Don't neglect vitamin B12 and folate. The main types of nutritional anemia are caused by a lack of iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid — all three are needed to help the body produce healthy red blood cells. Eggs, dairy, meat, and fortified foods cover B12; leafy greens, legumes, and citrus are your best folate sources.

Stay well hydrated. Drinking enough water supports overall blood health and keeps your body functioning at its best alongside any dietary or supplement changes.

Cook in cast iron. It sounds old-fashioned, but cooking in a cast-iron skillet can genuinely add small but meaningful amounts of iron to your food — especially with acidic ingredients like tomatoes.

One Thing That's Easy to Get Wrong

Many people, once they suspect anemia, immediately reach for an iron supplement. And while supplements can absolutely be part of the solution, figuring out which specific nutrient deficiency is driving your anemia matters enormously — because the wrong supplement won't help, and in some cases can cause unnecessary side effects. Getting a simple blood test — a complete blood count (CBC) — is the clearest way to know what you're actually dealing with.
